We Can Create – Important info for this year’s event.

Hi everyone, you may have received information from the old Semi-Permanent NZ facebook page regarding a Semi-Permanent NZ event for 2011.

To clarify, that page is now being run by Design is Kinky, based in Sydney, Australia. They were the founders of Semi Permanent in 2004.

We brought Semi-Permanent to New Zealand, ran it for 7 years and made it the event that it was. But it’s an Australian property. We Can Create is our new, Kiwi-owned venture, which promises to be bigger and better than SP has ever been.

Our line-up of international speakers is testament to the fact that We Can Create will be the preeminent creative professionals symposium in Aotearoa. Date, venue and speakers are confirmed for Aotea Centre, Friday 26th and 27th August.

Thanks for clearing that up :) Looking forward to it!

So… you ditch DiK’s awesome property, and set your own up, and put it on around the same time that SP is normally on.

That’s…. kind of a dick move guys. We’re not just a local community we’re a global community, and there’s more than enough room for two design conferences. Why not just put yours on at a different time?

  • The Church

Thanks for your reply Bob, we’re the team that’s put in the hard yards and energy and money to bring and run this event in New Zealand, and for the last few years we’ve run it nearly independently from DiK.

It was a hard decision to leave the brand we’d spent so much blood, sweat and tears building up, but we felt it was the right thing to do for us. Given we’ve run the event our way, in our time for the past 6 years, that date arguably belongs to us.

We’re a New Zealand company that’s always put our community first, we brought SP to NZ for the community and we’re trying to build We Can Create into something even more special for the (local) community.

    Thanks

    The Church.

Yep, you’ve done fantastic work building the conference up. But it’s still DiK’s property and if you don’t want it any more and they want to continue it on, then you’re really just screwing them over for your own benefit, not some misguided sense of local pride. You don’t own a date, and SP is bigger than you are so just put it on a different time, the local community will benefit more from two conferences and you won’t get a reputation for screwing people over.

A bit disappointed that both SP and We Can Create are on at the same time pretty much, but oh well. Will just have to see if I can afford to go to both events. Don’t get me wrong, I’m definitely happy that there is a NZ event now too though… it’s just not the greatest of timing, especially as my work will only buy me a ticket to one of the events and not both.

I for one welcome our new We Can Create overlords.

Hey Bobby, check your timeline: these dudes announced their dates way before SP. If anyone’s screwing the local community over it’s DiK by subsequently setting their own dates so close. Pretty weak reaction IMHO

Pretty simple really Bob – If you don’t like it, don’t attend! For the rest of the us that are looking forward to having better choice and a greater focus on the NZ design community, i’ll see you there.

For me it’s great having 2 to choose from! choice : )
